William "Bill" Burns Woernley, 88, of Homer, passed away on February 19, 2024 in Cortland.
He was born September 22, 1935 in Ithaca, a son of the late Laurence and Alice (Burns) Woernley. Bill graduated from Moravia High School and was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the Signal Corps from 1954-57. He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves on December 31, 1961. He thereafter completed a tool and die maker apprenticeship and worked at Smith Corona Marchant (SCM) for 38 years, until his health would no longer permit.
Bill collected antique clocks and was a charter member of the local chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC).
He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann (Pierson) Woernley in 2019, and is survived by his sons, John Woernley, of Homer, and James Woernley (Joanna), of Dryden. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Eryn, attending Cornell University; a cousin; and a brother-in-law, Frank Pierson (Doris), of Groton. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Laurence Woernley, Jr. (Sylvia).
Private graveside services will be held in the spring at West Groton Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Homer Fire Department, 45 S. Main St., Homer, NY 13077, or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Shurtleff Funeral Home, Groton.
