Phillip A. English, 98, of Groton, passed away on May 21, 2023 at the
Groton Community Health Care Center.
Phil was born on October 1, 1924 in Groton, a son of the late DeForest
and Anna (Wilkins) English. A lifelong Groton resident, Phil
attended Groton schools and retired after 40 years as a tool maker at
Smith Corona Marchant (SCM). He was an avid golfer and a member of
Stonehedges Golf Course.
An Army Veteran of World War II, Phil served in General Patton's 3rd
Army Cavalry Division from 1943-45 and was deployed in Northern France,
Ardennes, and Rhineland/Central Europe. He was a 75-year member of
Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion in Groton, the DAV Cortland
Memorial Chapter #153, and the Clifford E. Galbraith VFW Post 7127,
Moravia.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Susan
English, daughter, Joanne Madigan, and daughter-in-law, Donna English,
all of Groton; two grandchildren, Robyn (Jason) Space and Brittany
(Dominic) Barillaro; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Natalie, Dominic
Jr, Killian, Orion; and one great-great-grandson, Shawn.
He was predeceased by his wife, Erma M. (Spaziani) English in 2004; a
son, David M. English, in 1998; and his brother Stanley English in 2017.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Groton
Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held
at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Post 800 American Legion,
Groton. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, are graciously directed to
the Groton Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 96, Groton, NY 13073 or to Post 800
American Legion, 307 Main St., Groton, NY 13073. Arrangements have been
entrusted to the Shurtleff Funeral Home, Groton.
