Michael J. Portzline, 80, of Groton, passed away unexpectedly at home on November 5, 2024.
Mike was born on August 29, 1944 in Ithaca, a son of the late Glenn and Drissa (Coggshall) Portzline. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Dryden Central School. Mike retired after 25 years with Pall Trinity Micro in Cortland and had worked for many years prior for Smith Corona and Viking Lanes in Dryden. He was President of the United Auto Workers Local 1326 for several years.
He was a US Army Veteran, serving in the Army 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War, where he was honored with a purple heart among many other dignified awards for his service. He was an active and devoted member of Chapter #377 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion, Groton. He was passionate about talking with people, whoever you are. Mike loved to give speeches regarding many topics including the Vietnam War. He was proud that his speeches were enjoyed and often scheduled months or a year in advance.
Mike was an avid collector throughout his life of military memorabilia, comic books, McDonald's toys, Viewmaster reels, Little Golden books, and stamps. He had also operated a baseball card store in Groton. He enthusiastically participated in area bowling, slow-pitch softball leagues and coached over the years for women's softball and little league Babe Ruth baseball. During his time at Pall Trinity, Mike was very proud as he helped establish their recycling program, saving the company a lot of money.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Barber) Portzline, of Groton; a son, Christopher Portzline (Caitlin), of Homer, and their children, Raiden and Henley Portzline; sisters, Glenda Wilson (Richard) and Marlene Driscoll (John), both of Florida; a brother, Gary Portzline (Patricia), of Houston; many nieces, nephews, cousins and compatriots.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gregory Portzline (surviving, Patricia).
