Mary Jane Nielsen

Mary Jane Nielsen, 95, of Groton, passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2024.

She was born November 14, 1928 in West Groton, a daughter of the late Nicholas “Nick” and Beatrice (Hough) Warner and was a lifelong area resident. Mary retired as an assembler at Smith Corona Marchant (SCM) in Groton, and had worked in prior years at the Finger Lakes Honey Cooperative in Groton.

She is survived by her children: Elizabeth Rightmire (Gary), of Groton, Linda Peaslee, also of Groton, William Nielsen (Mary), of Houston, TX, and Laura Turner (Craig), of McGraw; six grandchildren:  Angela Shurtleff (Chad), Kristina VanHorn (Joe), Amy Schwoebel (Matt), Stephanie Koshuta (Jon), Ross Turner (Joy), and Chase Turner (Katie); 14 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Carlton Warner, of Locke, William Warner, of Locke, Robert Warner, of Freeville, and Roy Warner, of IN; sisters, Ann Sutphin, of Freeville, Arlene Davis, of NC, and Carol Jean Bower, of Syracuse.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan M. Rightmire; a sister, Elizabeth Warner; and brothers: Gordon, Theodore, Arthur, and Lawrence Warner.

Friends may call from 1:30-3:00 PM on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton. A funeral service will follow calling hours at 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Spring interment will be in the West Groton Cemetery.
