Kris Sims, 79, of Groton, passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2024 at home.
Kris was born on April 9, 1945 in Cortland, son of the late Allen and Barbara (Muckey) Sims. A lifelong Groton resident, Kris graduated with the GCS Class of 1963 and served from 1963-1967 in the US Air Force. Kris experienced a full career as an electrician for NYSEG and AES Cayuga, working at the Milliken Station power plant. He enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting and piloting his plane.
He was a Life Member of Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion, with 54 years of continuous membership. He was a Past Commander of the Post, having served multiple terms and was currently serving as Chaplain. He was also Past Commander of the Tompkins County American Legion and served until recently as the County Chaplain. He served for many years in the Post 800 Honor Guard, participating in Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, as well as many military funerals over the years and was Master of Ceremonies for many of the Veterans Day dinners. He leaves a proud legacy of contributions to Post 800 and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Schuck) Sims; children: Stephen Sims (Sharri), of Florence, SC; Christine Wilson (Chuck), of Knoxville, TN; Allison Randall (Logan), of Groton and Fred Portzline, of Groton; grandchildren: Skyler Sims, Erica Powell, Bridgette Stabler, and Brooke, Brody & Blake Randall; great grandchildren: Maximus & Oliver Stabler, as well as Carlee, Parker, Sophia, Adrianna, Joslyn, & Lawna Powell; and sisters, Ann Marie Seymour (Tim), of McGraw and Lori Carroll (Brian), of Elkin, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Duane Sims, and sisters, Terri Alsdorf and Wendy Pierce.
Friends may call from 1:00-3:00 PM on Friday, May 10 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton. A celebration of life, with military honors, will follow calling hours at 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
