James J. Allen, Jr.

Groton
JJ was born on November 6, 1955 in Brooklyn, a son of the late James J. and Marion (McDonald) Allen, Sr. An area resident most of his life, he was a graduate of Groton Central School, and retired after 35 years as a custodian at Cornell University. After "retirement," he continued his custodial work for the Groton Housing Authority, the Town and Village of Groton, the Police & Fire Departments, and Robert C. Dempsey Insurance.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) of Carrington-Fuller Post 800, where he served on the Post's Honors Team. He volunteered with the Town of Groton Historical Association, participated with the Groton Cruisers, and was an honorary member of the Groton Fire Department. He enjoyed NASCAR and sports, cheering on the Chargers and the Cubs.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Florence (Butts) Allen; his daughters, Jamie Zigenfus (Jeremy) and Julie Hodges (Timothy); grandchildren: Jacob & Jillian Zigenfus and Zoe Hodges; and extended family & friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 23 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Avenue, Groton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon- 2:00 PM on Saturday, preceding the funeral. Interment will be in Groton Rural Cemetery.
