Dorothy E. Barger, 93, of King Ferry, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024 at Cayuga Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Dottie or Dort, as she was known by many, was born on August 13, 1931 in Lansing, a daughter of the late Michael and Sophie (Romanowski) Zifchock. A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Ludlowville High School. Dorothy was a waitress for 28 years at the Royal Court Restaurant and had been employed in earlier years at Howard Johnson's and Rex's restaurants.
A woman of strong faith, she was an active communicant and advocate of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in King Ferry. She volunteered at the King Ferry Food Pantry and the Genoa Historical Association & Museum. She enjoyed many summers at the family cottage where she went fishing, and enjoyed spending time with neighbors and friends at Thirty Island and Sangster Lake in Ontario. From simple Sunday suppers to large holiday buffets, she was happy to host get-togethers with family, neighbors and friends.
She is survived by her children: Kathleen (Dana) Shipos, Judith (David) Withers, both of Lansing; and Gary (Maureen) Barger of Newark Valley; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; siblings: Richard Zifchock of Lansing, Dolores Teeter of Dryden, Marion Partridge of Lansing, Carl Zifchock of NC, and Donald (Rosie) Zifchock of Trumansburg, a son-in-law, Roger Schnock of Lansing; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William Barger in 2006, daughters BillieJo Schnock in 2017, Mary Ann Barger in 2018, and a son, Michael Barger in 2019.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 13 at Our Lady of the Lake Church in King Ferry, with Rev. William Moorby as celebrant. Interment will follow in Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00-6:00 PM on Thursday, September 12 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 10117 State Route 90, Genoa.
