Betsy B. Hargett, 97, of Locke, passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2024.
She was born on October 4, 1926 in Cortland, a daughter of the late Henry and Gladys (Riese) Breeds. A lifelong area resident, Betsy graduated from Moravia High School. In addition to raising eight children and tending with her husband to Maple Glen Farm, she was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired after 19 years at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Countless quilts were stitched by Betsy and gifted to family and friends. She also made lap robes for residents of nursing and veterans homes. She remained active in her church and community, volunteering at the Loc Mor Thrift Shop, serving as secretary of the Women's Group at Christ United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia, as president of the Homer West Hill Cemetery, and as a member of the Piecemaking Quilt Guild. In earlier years, she was the Locke correspondent for the Republican Register.
She is survived by five daughters: Esther Thornton, Barbara Shields (John), Nancy Hargett (Tom Rieks), Joanne Dabulewicz, Marsha Durbin (Willard); three sons: Paul Hargett (Linda), Darrell Hargett (Jan), and Lee Hargett; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters: Dora Jones, Charlene Hamilton (Floyd), and June Abbey; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Hargett in 1999; grandson, Darren Hargett; great-grandson, Justin Starner; brothers: Douglas, Gerald, and Lawrence Breeds; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Hargett, and sons-in-law, Frank Thornton and Walter Dabulewicz.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, March 21 at Christ United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Thursday, preceding services. Interment will be at a later time in Homer West Hill Cemetery.
